“’Contested Visions’ a selection of works from a tumultuous fifty years period in South Africa.”
This period from the mid 1940s to the mid 1990s sees the country struggling through a painful political and social transformation from a minority dictatorship to a fully-fledged democracy. During this same time the western artworld experienced an ideological revolution. Postmodernism, an “… incredulity towards metanarratives” as Jean Francois Lyotard defined it, paved the way for the gradual breakdown of the old order of things.
Featuring artworks by: Marion Arnold, Penny Siopis, Willie Bester, Peter Clarke, John Mohl, Peter Schütz, Cecil Skotnes, Harry Trevor, Sydney Kumalo, Stanley Nkosi and Edoardo Villa
